Semionotus is an extinct genus of primitive, ray-finned fish that lived primarily from the Late Triassic to the Early Jurassic periods. This painting is based on a fossil found in the Chinle Group (often referred to as the Chinle Formation) which is a vast, world-famous sequence of terrestrial sedimentary rocks that spans across the southwestern United States. Deposited during the Late Triassic Period (roughly 230 to 210 million years ago), it is highly celebrated for its beautifully vibrant "badlands" topography and its exceptionally rich fossil record. Typically grew to about 1 foot (30 cm) in length
